KNIGHTS ADVANCE TO NCISAA 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH 2-1 DEFEAT OF WAYNE COUNTRY DAY; 18-0-1 Overall    HICKORY, NC -- The Hickory Christian Academy Knights battled Wayne Country Day (Goldsboro, NC) at Lenoir Rhyne Field on Thursday evening under the lights and secured the win and yet another opportunity at a NC state title.    The two traditional power houses in the 1A division churned out a tough defensive effort for the first 40 minutes of the contest as the score was deadlocked going into halftime, 0-0. There were a few opportunities for each squad, but neither seemed to get their foot on the ball at the right time or in the right spot.    It appeared that both teams were in a chess match during the first half, but the second half would be much different. At the 52nd minute mark freshman Braden Whitford was fouled and junior Jack Zaliagiris set up for the direct kick just over the midfield mark. Zaliagiris then booted a perfect kick towards the back post and Senior Tommy McGrath put his left foot on the ball, spurring it into the back of the net for the first score of the game, giving the Knights a 1-0 advantage.   The Chargers from Goldsboro answered just nine minutes later with their first goal to tie the score 1-1. It seemed they rode that momentum for the next seven minutes with a couple shots on goal. However, perhaps one of the most pivotal moments of the night came at the 68 minute mark as junior goalie Owen Duncan prevented the Chargers from going up a score. Duncan denied two shots on goal during a three minute span. This allowed the Knights to go to work on the offensive end.   At minute 73 junior Gabe Walker broke free for a shot on goal that bounced off the cross bar. Then the play of the night happened as eighth grader Braden Runyon found his way to the rebound and punched it in for the score, giving the Knights a 2-1 advantage with only 7 minutes remaining in the contest. Asked for his recap of the goal, Runyon said, "Gabe shot and it hit the post and it was totally God! He set the ball right in my direction and I bent over it and put it in!"   The final 7 minutes found the Knights possessing and playing smart, using the clock to their advantage. At the final whistle the Knights would be the winners and advance to the championship game.   The Battle Ball, an HCA tradition awarded to the player with best effort, attitude and leadership was presented to Braden Runyon. Never before has an eighth grader received the battle ball but on this night he was without a doubt the right recipient. Runyon has been a big contributor all season long and the Knights soccer program is excited to have him for 4 more years.    The NCIASS 1A playoffs are down to the final two teams, Hickory Christian Academy and Statesville Christian. The two conference foes will battle for the third time this season, this time with a state championship on the line. Game is set for 1:00 Saturday, October 28 at Wayne Country Day in Goldsboro.

KNIGHTS CAPTURE 4-2 WIN AGAINST COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IN THE QUARTERFINALS OF THE NCISAA 1A STATE PLAYOFFS; 17-0-1 Overall    HICKORY, NC- The Hickory Christian Academy Knights, coming off an eight day layoff sense the end of their regular season, hosted the Cyclones from Community Christian Academy. The Cyclones made the quarterfinals by way of knocking off Grace Christian School of Sanford and Ridgecroft School of Ahoskie, North Carolina.   The Cyclones struck first at the eleven minute mark off a corner kick and header into net. This perhaps awoke the Knights from their eight day layoff as they would score the next two goals of the quarterfinal contest. Senior Aiden Smith struck first for the Knights as senior Dixon O'hair set up Smith center of goal for the blast at minute thirty. Shortly thereafter, Freshman Wyatt King got in on the action as he took an assist from eight grader Braden Runyon and scored to put the Knights up 2-1 heading into halftime.   After a first half recap and second half strategy session from coach Josh Walker, the Knights performed as instructed and scored the first two goals when action resumed for half number two. At minute 60, junior Gabe Walker received an assist by Dixon O'hair to score and moved the lead to 3-1. Walker was intent on giving the Knights a little more cushion as he scored just four minutes later on an assist by senior Tommy McGrath.   The Cyclones continued to battle and were able to score with less than ten minutes remaining in the contest, moving the score to 4-2 but the Knights remarkable season would continue as they held court the final minutes to make it to the semifinals of the State Playoffs.    The Battle Ball, an HCA tradition awarded to the player with best effort, attitude and leadership was presented to junior right back Jack Zaliagiris. With multiple options to choose from for coach Walker, Zaliagiris was chosen for his all around play. The junior was aggressive on the defensive end throughout the contest and due to his dominate play on the right side, he was a catalyst for the offensive attack heading back the other direction.   The NCIASS 1A playoffs are down to four teams and the Knights will play host to Wayne Country Day on Tuesday October 24 @ 4:00, field one at Henry Fork Park. In the other semifinal bracket, Statesville Christian will travel to Wilson, North Carolina to face Greenfield School. The two winners of the semifinal contests will face off in Wilson, North Carolina on Saturday October 28 @ 1:00.

KNIGHTS PUT EXCLAMATION POINT ON REMARKABLE SEASON SCORING A 3-2, HARD FOUGHT WIN OVER UNIVERSITY CHRISTIAN, SECURING AN UNDEFEATED REGULAR SEASON; 16-0-1 Overall, 10-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)    HICKORY, NC- On senior night, the pre-game was highlighted by a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem from Caroline Collins and Brianna Stoots, both previous HCA students. Collins is the sister of HCA freshman soccer player Chase Collins. John McGrath, father of senior Tommy McGrath provided the opening prayer.   Playing in their third consecutive game in as many days the Knights wanted nothing more than to finish strong with an undefeated regular season and to send the seniors out with a victory. But it wouldn't come easy as the Barracudas set out to be spoilers on this cool, windy evening at the Lenoir-Rhyne soccer field.   As the Knights have done for all but one game this season, they came out blazing with the first score of the evening at the 4 minute mark of the contest. Senior Tommy McGrath continued his second half of the season dominance as he placed the ball in the back of the net on an assist by senior Aiden Smith. However, the Barracudas would answer relatively quickly with their own goal, hitting net 8 minutes later at the 12 minute mark. The score would remain tied at 1-1 as the teams headed into halftime.   A HCA tradition, this years seniors were honored in a halftime ceremony. As a contingent of HCA representatives gathered at the mid field mark, each senior was escorted by their parents in front of the team, receiving much deserved applause as a recap of their career accomplishments on and off the field and most memorable soccer experience was presented to the crowd. To conclude the ceremony, Kyle Abernathy took photographs of players, parents and coaches. If that name sounds familiar Kyle was a major contributor and standout player for coach Josh Walker several years ago. He also previously served as the Knights assistant coach and continues to be an asset for our teams success.   As the teams headed back onto the field to begin the second 40 minutes of action, the Knights knew they had to strike first to swing the momentum back in their favor. Senior Dixon O'hair did not disappoint as he took an assist from junior Gabe Walker just 45 seconds into the half and crushed it into goal to put the Knights up 2-1. The next thirty minutes were deadlocked as neither team could create the right opportunities for scoring opportunities. But in minute 70, University Christian scored and the game was tied again at 2-2.    With just 10 minutes remaining the Knights really could not afford a 20 minute overtime period as the long week and consecutive games were beginning to take its tole both physically and mentally. That's when junior wing Luke Ikerd took matters into his own hands and out hustled his defender on the left side of the pitch and sent a left to right cross to Gabe Walker who immediately took advantage of his positioning to score the winning goal. At the time of Walker's goal only 2 minutes remained in the contest and negated an opportunity for the Barracudas to take the game into overtime. Fortunately for the Knights no overtime period was needed.   The Battle Ball is a HCA tradition awarded to the player with best effort, attitude and leadership and was presented to all five seniors for their contribution over the last several years to the program and for their win on senior night. Tommy McGrath, Eli Sigmon, Dixon O'hair, Aiden Smith and Thomas McEwan gladly accepted and their teammates unanimously approved coach Walker's decision.   Freshman Caleb McMurray saw his first action in over 6 weeks as he has recovered from a broken toe. The freshman was able to get 10-15 minutes of game action and will continue his conditioning as he works his way back into the rotation.   In the team huddle at the conclusion of the game, head coach Josh Walker shared his thoughts on the win and what's on the horizon for the Knights. "It wasn't our best effort but we got the win. You all know that. And you know where you need to get better. Not only physically but mentally. You have to be strong. It's been a long week and you pulled it out. No other HCA team has ever went undefeated in conference. You have", stated Walker. "Our first season was camp and preseason tournament, the second season we just finished and now our third season begins and that is the playoffs! We have tomorrow off, no practice, but when we come out Monday we come out hard, with our best efforts and we work harder than we have up to this point".    Now that the regular season is in the books, it’s time to shift focus as the state playoffs are on deck. It’s hard to believe, but the first and second rounds will be played next Tuesday, October 17 and Thursday, October 19th; its crunch time! Based on overall record and strength of schedule the Knights should secure a bye for both rounds. MaxPreps has the Knights as the number one team in the state of North Carolina. That will carry weight but will not be all the committee considers when they meet in Greensboro this Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:00 pm to seed the teams for the playoffs. It is quite possible that the Knights will be hosting a playoff game on Saturday, October 21 at Henry Fork Park in Hickory.

KNIGHTS BEAT CONFERENCE RIVAL STATESVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 4-2, NOW 15-0-1 Overall, 9-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)    STATESVILLE, NC- For the second time in six days Hickory Christian Academy defeated Statesville Christian Academy to win the SPAA conference championship outright. It was the third time in four years the Knights have achieved this distinction. Seniors Tommy McGrath and Dixon O'hair have been a part of three conference championships. Also seniors Eli Sigmon and Aiden Smith have two conference championships under their belts and senior Thomas McEwen one.    Fans would have to wait 30 minutes into the action before they would see the games first goal. Until that point defense had dominated the game on both sides but the Knights struck payday first as junior forward Gabe Walker received a beautiful cross, right to left, from 8th grader Braden Runyon for the games first goal. Just five minutes later at the 35 minute mark, Statesville scored on a laser guided corner kick that saw a Statesville player score on a header to the right corner of goal. Going into halftime the score was deadlocked at 1-1.    "I like what we are doing," coach Walker told the team at halftime. "We are winning the ball, distributing well and our energy is right where it needs to be. That is the best half of soccer we have played all season".   However, the Lions, just 7 minutes into the 2nd half had a flurry of opportunities right on goal. Three shots at point blank range went off crossbar, left post then right post. But the fourth attempt would prove to be the one as Statesville went up on the Knights 2-1. But the Lions received a dose of the Knights grit and mental toughness as junior Gabe Walker sent an on point assist over to senior forward Tommy McGrath at minute number 52 who did what he does best, put the ball in the back of the net to knot the score at 2-2. Keeping the pressure on Gabe Walker willed his way through the defense and pushed the ball into goal with seemingly every part of his body to give the Knights a 3-2 advantage. Then just 3 minutes later at the 60 minute mark McGrath would not be denied and gave up his body with a hard fall to the ground just as he finished placing the ball into the net for a 4-2 score. The next 20 minutes would see the ball back and forth but no real threats by either team. As the clock went to 0:00 the scoreboard read 4-2 Knights and the celebration of another SPAA conference championship began.   On a very hot day on the pitch, 88 degrees to be exact, the Knights had to have minutes from the bench and boy did they ever. Junior Aedan Arnot, Freshmen Wyatt King, Chase Collins and Garrisons Mullis provided quality minutes and received recognition from the coaches. Not much changed when they were in the game and this proved critical in the closing 20 minutes of the contest as the Knights were able to dig a little deeper and finished with great energy and enthusiasm. Junior right back Jack Zaliagiris played his best game of the season, battling and preventing the offense from making any real threat throughout the contest on the his side of the pitch.   With perhaps his most difficult decision this season of choosing a player to receive the Battle Ball, junior Gabe Walker was today's recipient. The Battle Ball is a HCA tradition awarded to the player with best effort, attitude and leadership. Walker was the throttle that ran the engine as he finished with two goals and one assist. He is leading the team in both scoring and assists for the season.    The knights five seniors will be honored at halftime of Thursdays regular season finale against University Christian. The game is slated for a 6:30 start on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University at Moretz Sports Complex.

KNIGHTS CONTINUE THEIR SOLID PLAY WITH A 4-3 OVERTIME VICTORY OVER STATESVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY: 13-0-1 Overall, 7-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)    HICKORY, NC- Senior forward Tommy McGrath accounted for all four goals as the Hickory Christian Academy Knights came out on the winning end of an epic battle between these two conference rivals at Henry Fork River Park Thursday afternoon.    It took the home Knights just 12 minutes to get on the scoreboard with McGrath's first goal. Statesville then put on the pressure, scoring the next two goals at the 17 and 19 minute marks to go up 2-1 on the Knights. But McGrath would have nothing of it as he scored his second goal of the afternoon at the 22 minute mark to even the score at 2-2. The next thirteen minutes of the contest saw both teams give tremendous effort as the Knights and Lions contested seemingly every move on the pitch. Fortunately for the Knights McGrath was not finished and he scored again with just a few minutes remaining in the half giving the home Knights a 3-2 advantage at the break.   As head coach Josh Walker was concluding his halftime adjustments, junior Will Lehman inspired his teammates, slowly approaching the huddle while on crutches with an unexpected visit. On the morning of the game the junior center mid underwent season ending hip surgery. "I wish I could be out there on the field with you, just win" was the message he had for the team as he was traveling back home mid morning.    Another Knight, sophomore Sawyer DelCharco, was home under concussion protocol for the second straight game. A message was sent through assistant coach Daryl Carter from earlier in the day. "Me and Will (Lehman) have been taking hits all season for you guys. Go beat Statesville".   With the inspiring presence and words from their injured teammates the Knights came out attacking at the onset of the second half as they had four shots on goal within a matter of 30 seconds, three of which bounced off the cross bar. Unfortunately for the Knights neither made it into the net. The visiting Lions from Statesville Christian would not let up as they worked their way back into the contest, scoring a goal at the 54 minute mark to even up the contest 3-3. The remainder of the second half saw a lot of back and forth, close calls and multiple players from each side experiencing cramping.    As the game would end in a 3-3 tie, conference rules dictate a 20 minute overtime period with a break at the 10 minute mark. Once again, senior forward Tommy McGrath would not be denied as he punched it in the back of the net just 3 minutes into the overtime period to give the Knights a 4-3 advantage. From that point on both teams battled hard but their would be no more scoring and the Knights came out with the win.   No surprise here as senior Tommy McGrath received the Battle Ball for he second consecutive contest. The Battle Ball is a HCA tradition awarded to the player with best effort, attitude and leadership. Not many under the tenure of 15 year head coach Josh Walker can say they received the ball two times in a row.    The celebration is short lived as the Knights, now 13-0-1, 7-0, prepare for their second straight contest with the Lions from Statesville Christian. The Lions play host to the Knights on their campus in Statesville Monday night. Game time is set for 7:00.

Win: 8 - 0
HCA EARNS 8-0 VICTORY OVER WOODLAWN: 12-0-1 Overall, 6-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)    HICKORY, NC- The Knights battled Woodlawn in an afternoon contest at Henry Fork Park field number four. The Knights are peaking at the right time and continuing to prepare for the NCISAA playoffs in mid October.   Senior Dixon O'hair got the ball rolling offensively for the Knights in minute thirteen on an assist by senior Tommy McGrath. Seven minutes later junior Gabe Walker blasted the ball to the back of the net off a direct kick from the right side. Twenty-three minutes in Braden Runyon scored off a throw in from junior Wil Lehman. Gabe Walker continued his mastery of the Woodlawn defense as he scored the next two goals for the Knights, the beneficiary of assists by Tommy McGrath and Dixon O'hair. O'hair went back to work quickly, scoring his second goal of the contest off an assist by Gabe Walker.  Closing out the scoring was freshman Braden Whitford who scored at the 65th and 70th minute marks with one assist coming by way of Gabe Walker and Braden Runyon providing the other. Whitford has stepped up his game over the last few contests and the results are evident.   All of this scoring by the Knights happened with Woodlawn not seeing much time on the Knights side of the pitch. For the game Woodlawn would not see much time on the offensive side of the field as the Knights defense once again proved to be too strong for their opponent. Defensively it was a total team effort and all players received significant minutes.   The Knights Battle Ball, a HCA tradition that recognizes the player with he best effort, best attitude, etc, went to senior forward Tommy McGrath. It was clearly the senior's best overall performance of this season as he has fully healed from midseason surgery that saw him miss four weeks of action. For the game, McGrath gave maximum effort and showed tremendous grit and determination, seemingly always in the right position and winning advantage over his defender. The senior also had two assists on the day.   Next up for the Knights is a home contest against conference foe Statesville Christian Academy on Thursday October 5th with a 4:00 start at henry Fork Park field four.

KNIGHTS FINISH THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER UNDEFEATED WITH 9-1 WIN OVER NEUSE CHRISTIAN: 11-0-1 Overall, 5-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)    WAKE FOREST, NC- The Knights traveled three hours east just beyond Raleigh, NC for an out of conference contest against Neuse Christian Academy at Endeavor Charter School field Thursday night. Game time was 5:30 pm and finished at approximately 7:10 pm just as light started to fade away into the night. The long mid week trip proved fruitful for the Knights in many ways.   Offensively the Knights struck early as junior forward Gabe Walker crossed the ball over from the left side to Senior forward Tommy McGrath who put a light touch on ball to score the games first goal under a minute into the contest. Next up were two scores from Gabe Walker in the 18th and 23rd minutes, giving the Knights a 3-0 halftime advantage. At the 47th minute mark Tommy McGrath struck net once again as the senior skied high into the air with a beautiful header after receiving the corner kick from Gabe Walker. Gabe Walker scored at the 48th minute, Tommy McGrath the 50th minute, Tommy McGrath 57th minute. Next, scoring his first goal of the season was junior defensive right back Jack Zaliagiris who seemed to come out of nowhere to score on a header from Dixon O'hair's precisely placed corner kick during minute number 58. Junior Gabe Walker concluded the scoring at the 67th minute.   Recapping the scoring, senior Tommy McGrath and junior Gabe Walker each had four goals with Jack Zaliagiris adding one. Receiving assists on the night were Gabe Walker (3), Dixon O'hair (2), Braden Whitford (1), Garrison Mullis (1) and Tommy McGrath (1).   Defensively the Knights were led by junior Owen Duncan. The Knights goalie arrived focused and ready to play as he stopped several close shots on goal and held Neuse Christian to one score.    The Knights Battle Ball, a HCA tradition that recognizes the player with he best effort, best attitude, etc, went to senior mid Dixon O'hair. Throughout the contest O'hair controlled the middle of the field, showing hustle and ball control and consistently distributed to multiple teammates leading to a great scoring night for HCA. O'hair was equally in control on the defensive end as he disrupted the offensive momentum of the host team and switched the field repeatedly.    Next up for the Knights will be a home contest vs conference foe Woodlawn. Game time is set for 4:00 Tuesday, October 3 @ Henry Fork Park in Hickory.   The remaining regular season schedule looks like this:   (Home) Tuesday October 3rd @ Henry Fork vs Woodlawn, 4:00 (Home) Thursday October 5th @ Henry Fork vs Statesville Christian, 4:00 (Away) Monday October 9th @ Statesville Christian, 7:00 (Away) Tuesday October 10th @ North Hills Christian (Salisbury area), 4:00 (Home) Thursday October 12th @ Henry Fork vs University Christian   State playoff seedings will take place on Sunday October 15th. State tournament games will begin on Tuesday October 17th @ home of higher seeds. It seems the first 4 seeds will receive a first round bye and potential second round bye pending number of teams participating.

KNIGHTS TAKE A 10-0 VICTORY OVER VICTORY CHRISTIAN: 10-0-1 Overall, 5-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)  CHARLOTTE, NC- Today was a different kind of day for the Knights. We will cover that later in the recap but first let's cover the game stats. Junior Gabe Walker once again led the Knights offensive attack, scoring four goals in the contest. Tommy McGrath exercised his new slogan; PLACEMENT OVER POWER, meaning more finesse around the goal that leads to more goals scored. The result...two goals for the senior captain. Freshman Wyatt King scored goal at the 10 minute mark, freshman Garrison Mullis at the 20 minute mark. Senior Dixon O'Hair, a stellar performer all season for the Knights, hit the back of the net for goal at the 24 minute mark. Junior Owen Duncan came out of his normal goalie position and hit goal at the 31 minute mark off a well placed corner kick by Tommy McGrath. The Knights ten goals were accompanied by some well placed assists. Providing the assists were Gabe Walker (3),Tommy McGrath (2), Luke Ikerd (1), Braden Runyon (1), Wyatt King (1) and Garrison Mullis (1). One of the best moments of the evening was the presentation of the Knights Battle Ball, a HCA tradition that recognizes the player with he best effort, best attitude, etc. Except this time it did not go to a player. In a twist of tradition the Knights players, led by senior captain Eli Simon presented the Battle Ball to their head ball coach...Coach Josh Walker. The kids showed their respect and admiration for their coach, a well deserved reward for his hard work and dedication not only making them better on the field but off the field as well. Thanks coach for all you do. I have attached a picture for everyone to see. Next up for the Knights this weekend is their annual High School Retreat at Lookout Lodge. Please pray daily for this retreat, that hearts are open and minds are clear, that God's word is received by these young men and women.

"A NIGHT FOR THE KNIGHTS", HCA SECURES A HARD FOUGHT 3-0 VICTORY OVER UNIVERSITY CHRISTIAN: 9-0-1 Overall, 4-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)    HICKORY, NC- The Knights battled University Christian under the lights at the Soccer Field at The Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex on the campus of Lenoir Rhyne University Monday night. Just as the sun settled beyond the tree line it was all business for the Knights, showing tremendous effort and grit en route to a 3-0 victory. It was the Knights seventh shutout of the season in ten contests. For the season, the Knights have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 45-4. But the remaining schedule is what's important as the Knights look to secure a top seed(s) and receive a first and second round bye in the NCISAA playoffs in mid October.   Offensively the Knights saw three different players get in the scoring column. Striking first was junior forward Gabe Walker at the 17 minute mark who received an assist from sophomore Sawyer DelCharco. Next in line with the second score of the evening was junior Luke Ikerd at minute number 60 as Gabe Walker provided the assist. To give the Knights a little breathing room to secure the win freshman Garrison Mullis found the back of the net on a hustle assist by senior Tommy McGrath.   This game was all about hustle and effort for the Knights as everyone contributed quality minutes on the pitch. The Knights have a deep team this season and all players continue to play a key role in the teams success. Providing valuable minutes with solid play were junior Aiden Arnot, sophomores Spencer Burton and Sawyer DelCharco, freshmen Braden Whitford, Chase Collins, Wyatt King and Garrison Mullis.    The Knights Battle Ball, a HCA tradition that recognizes the player with he best effort, best attitude, etc, went to senior left back Thomas McEwan. It was clearly the senior's best overall performance of this season as the Barracudas from University Christian were stymied down the left side throughout the contest. Pressure defense, ball control and timely and accurate distribution of the ball were a hallmark of McEwan's performance throughout the contest.   This was a "night" for the "Knights" as family members joined for a pre and post game tailgate in the adjacent parking lot on the LR campus. Good fellowship and great food was had by the large crowd in attendance. A shout out to John and Tammy DelCharco for their oversight of the event and to all the other parents and family members that were on site working diligently to make sure a good time was had by all.   Next up for the Knights is a road contest at conference foe Victory Christian. Game time is set for 5:00 Thursday, September 21st.

KNIGHTS CONTINUE UNDEFEATED SEASON, CAPTURING A 9-0 VICTORY OVER NORTH HILLS: 8-0-1 Overall, 3-0 Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA)    HICKORY, NC- The Hickory Christian Academy Knights received huge minutes from previously injured senior Tommy McGrath and junior Wil Lehman who both recorded 20 plus minutes of action in a game shortened at the 43 minute mark. Still nursing a broken toe was freshman Caleb McMurray who is due back in a couple of weeks. His return will be a welcome site as he will be expected to be a key contributor heading down the home stretch of the season.    Senior Thomas McEwan (knee) and junior Jack Zaliagiris (neck/back) both played despite nursing injuries.   Offensively the Knights were dominant today as four players contributed on the scoring end. Timely and accurate passing allowed the Knights to continuously get behind the defensive line of the Eagles, allowing multiple shots on goal.  Junior Gabe Walker continued his season long scoring onslaught leading the Knights with six goals (3 minute, 5 minute, 21 minute, 22 minute, 35 minute and 43 minute).    Senior Tommy McGrath started right where he left off before his finger injury, playing his first game in four weeks looking like he hadn't missed a beat, knocking in his goal at the 33 minute mark.   As the 37 minute approached, freshman Wyatt King got into the scoring column, giving the Knights a 7-0 advantage. Before the Eagles could recover, junior Luke Ikerd punched in the 8th goal of the contest right before the first half ended at the 39 minute mark.   During the halftime break, Coach Josh Walker found it hard to identify any correction as the Knights certainly came ready to play, were focused on the task at hand and gave maximum effort to put themselves in a nice position as the 2nd half opened.   About as long as it took to get the large crowd of HCA supporters to get settled on the opposite sideline as the 2nd half began, junior Gabe Walker struck once again, ending the game with his sixth goal of the contest at the 43 minute mark.   Eight of the nine goals were scored by way of assists which further illustrates the Knights unselfish play on the pitch. Junior Gabe Walker (2 assists), freshman Garrison Mullis (2 assists), junior Jack Zaliagiris, senior Dixon O'hair, freshman Wyatt King and 8th grader Braden Runyon each recored assists for the Knights.     Defensively the Knights were flying to the ball, staying in position and disciplined to the point of sheer frustration for the visitors from Salisbury. The Eagles simply had no answer for the defensive pressure being applied throughout the game.   True to tradition the team jogged over to the crowd receiving a standing ovation for their terriffic play. But instead of returning to the bench - players, coaches, family members and fans gathered together for a time of soccer updates, praise and a time of prayer. Pastor Mark Ikerd, father of junior Luke Ikerd was called on to lead us in prayer. We praise God for these wonderful kids and their families.    Receiving the Knights Battle Ball, a Hickory Christian Academy tradition recognizing the player today with the most grit, tenacity and dedication was Wil Lehman. Wil has been sidelined with a labrum tear in his hip joint and has missed several weeks of action. Surgery is scheduled for early October but is pending a postponement if the pain is tolerable. The surgeon has assured the Lehman's no further damage can be done and it's totally about the pain level if the junior can continue to contribute to the Knight's run for another state championship.   The Knights return to action on Monday September 18th @ 7:00 pm for a contest under the lights against conference and city rival University Christian. The game will be played on the campus of Lenoir Rhyne University. The soccer field is located at the LR track.

This proved to be a total team effort with each player helping the Hickory Christian Academy Knights take their record to an impressive 5-0-1, defeating Tri City Eagles 3-0 at Tri City Christian School Monday afternoon.   The shutout, the Knights 4th out of 6 contests came despite dealing with numerous injuries.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      The Knights senior Tommy McGrath missed his 2nd consecutive game due to surgery (pins in left pinky finger), Caleb McMurray, his first game to a broken right big toe (out for 3 weeks) and Will Lehman, who asked to come out early in the contest due to lingering hip discomfort (MRI scheduled for this Thursday afternoon).   The Knights controlled the possession of the ball for the majority of the game; estimated to be 55 of 80 minutes. If not for one save late in the contest by goalie Owen Duncan the Eagles really were no threat to score.    Coach Josh Walker was congratulatory to the team during his post game speech recognizing the teams time of possession and desire to compete. Coach Walker did however discuss the importance of finishing around goal in our next match against Victory Christian.    Receiving the Battle Ball, a Hickory Christian tradition given to the player that shows the best overall effort was Jack Zaliagiris. Jack displayed superb defensive technique and positioning, halting any offensive attack by the Eagles on the right side of the pitch and was called upon for multiple goal kicks to jumpstart a counter attack for the Knights offense.   The Knights have a short turnaround as they play host to their first conference foe of the season, Victory Christian at the Conover YMCA on Tuesday, August 29th @ 4:00.

Win: 3 - 1
KNIGHTS CONTINUE THEIR WINNING WAYS   Lenoir- On a relatively cool evening that had Hibriten's Walter Schronce sing the national anthem before the game, Gabriel Walker and Braden Whitford accounted for all three goals as the Hickory Christian Academy Knights increased their total wins to four against no losses and one tie, defeating Hibriten Panthers 3-1 at William Lenoir Middle School in Caldwell County Thursday night.   Through five games the Knights have allowed only two goals and outscored it's opponents 17-2 with all contests against higher division teams. The Hibriten Panthers are members of the Northwestern Foothills Conference.   It took the visiting Knights just 2 minutes to crack into the scoring column. Following a pin point assist from Will Lehman, Gabe Walker punched it in for the games first score. The Knights then went up 2-0 on a goal by a very determined Braden Whitford only 12 minutes into the contest.    The Panthers managed to score a goal around the 52 minute mark but the Knights sealed the game at the 76 minute mark with a Gabe Walker goal, his second of the night with Braden Runyon providing the assist.    Coach Josh Walker was extremely pleased with the teams focus, energy and overall performance acknowledging that this was perhaps the Knights most complete game of this young season.    Receiving the Battle Ball, a Hickory Christian tradition given to the player that shows the best overall effort was Aiden Smith. Aiden was a force throughout the contest, maximizing his athletic abilities to disrupt and deter the Panther's offensive game plan. The senior stopper was seen all over the field making the Panther's think he had a twin.    The Knights fans were again in full force, outnumbering the home Hibriten fans. The kids were excited when they looked over in the stands and witnessed such a big crowd supporting their efforts. Thank you to all parents and family members for your commitment to cheering on your Knights.   As the early season non-conference schedules continue, the Knights travel to cross county rival Tri-City Christian School in Conover Monday August 28th @ 4:00.

Lose: 0 - 0
The Knights hosted two-time defending 2A state champion Asheville Christian Academy at Conover YMCA and let's just say if you weren't able to make it out today you missed a good one. The game ended deadlocked 0-0 giving the Knights a 3-0-1 record. Fans packed the opposite sideline across the pitch from the teams, cheering loudly and right on top of the action. On behalf of the coaches and players we would like to say thank you to all in attendance.   Let's recap the action as it unfolded. A defensive battle was in play all game as neither team managed much of a consistent offensive threat. Credit an attacking defense and aggressive all around play on both sides of the ball. However, when Asheville or Hickory Christian formulated an attack all eyes were on the action, anticipating and hoping for a score. It would never materialize.   Coach Walker was pleased with the outcome; primarily effort, hustle and the ability to win the 50/50 balls during critical times of the contest. "I can live with the outcome. That was two evenly matched teams that battled to a tie", stated coach Josh Walker after the game.   Receiving the battle ball, a Hickory Christian tradition given to the player that exhibits the best effort, was Junior Keeper Owen Duncan. With Senior Keeper Tommy McGrath nursing an injured hand, Owen was called on the last couple games and stepped up big time, owning the position and making a game saving stop high in the goal in the 76th minute. For all of you infant soccer fans that means only 4 minutes left in the game.    Next game is away next Thursday against public school Hibriten.    For directions and future games please visit hcasports.org
